Honouring its namesake, it’s made in Japan’s first and oldest malt distillery, founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii. To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the founding House of Japanese whisky, we recall a whisky created to suit the delicate palate of the Japanese people. Yamazaki 18YO Mizunara is truly a gift from the hands of Suntory’s past craftsmen. The legendary Japanese Oak, Mizunara, is widely regarded as a difficult wood to master. The House of Suntory blending team first started experimenting with Mizunara wood as early as the 1940’s, with the guidance of the First-Generation Master Blender, Shinjiro Torii and Second-Generation Master Blender, Keizo Saji. Their first tasting identified that the young liquid in the Mizunara cask had a dominating flavour and aroma. Aged through Japan’s distinctive four seasons, nurtured in the land of Yamazaki, the determined past blenders found a balance of maturation and harmonious blend that led to mellow the force of Mizunara character. The whiskies are now matured until they can take on the distinctive Japanese spiciness and incense-like flavour of sandalwood and agarwood. Tasting Notes Colour: Reddish Amber Nose: Rich and elegant top notes of dark cherry and ripe peach, with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg Palate: Subtly spiced organette with undernotes of Japanese incense Finish: Long and lingering, accentuated with clove, sandalwood and hints of dried coconut *Hakushu official description* The Hakushu 18 YO Peated Single Malt is comprised of meticulously selected malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 18 years in various casks, created in honour of House of Suntory’s centenary. Nestled deep in Mt. Kaikomagatake, the Second-Generation Master Blender, Keizo Saji founded the Hakushu distillery. The blenders accepted the challenge of working with peat, made possible due to the distillery’s surrounding environment. The flavour was softened by the exceptionally pure mountain water, filtered through old granite rocks. This creates a fresh and gentle smoky single malt whisky, a revelation in Japanese single malts. Peated’ is a term most often associated with Scotch whiskies, however this liquid unveils a different kind of peated whisky – one that is referred to as the ‘Japanese Smoky’. Refined and elegant, this centennial Hakushu Peated Malt brings a new angle to peated whisky. The smoke here is less strong, never dominant and in typical Japanese style, more complex and gentle. What stands out is the flavour balance - a spicy, peppery welcome, a slow wave of clean smoke that deepens as it reveals its herbaceous notes and green fruity undertones. The bottle design is layered with nuances of dark green and light flecks of gold to reflect the whisky’s verdant and smoky, yet delicate, flavours.
