【Product details】
This is a genuine katana bearing the signature Kanesada (兼定). Several swordsmiths used this name, but the most renowned is the second-generation Kanesada of the Mino Kanesada school, commonly referred to as Nosada (之定). The nickname originates from the unique way the character 定 (Sada) in his signature resembles the kanji 之. Active during the late Muromachi period from 1493 to 1526, the second-generation Kanesada was celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship, which remains highly prized among collectors.
The scabbard is finished in tamenuri lacquer, a technique that creates a deep, layered look with the motifs of a phoenix and peony vines subtly emerging in black and reddish-brown hues. The phoenix symbolizes renewal and immortality, while the peony is known as the "King of Flowers" in East Asian culture, representing prosperity, honor, and beauty. These motifs together create a design rich in symbolism and aesthetic value.
The fittings are equally exquisite. The round iron tsuba (sword guard) features intricate openwork, while the menuki (hilt ornaments) are delicately shaped as peonies, echoing the scabbard's motif.
The katana comes with a copy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate, as the original document will be returned to the authorities. The certificate states the registration number as Hyōgo Prefecture No. 119063. It lists the blade classification as a katana, with a blade length of 70.0 cm and a curvature of 2.2 cm. The blade has two peg holes, and bears the inscription Kanesada (兼定) on the front. The certificate was issued on December 18, 2008.
The blade shows some minor scratches and areas of light rust consistent with its age. The scabbard has a few light dents, and the accompanying silk bag shows some stains, fraying, and loose threads. The nakago hole in the tsuba is larger than the blade's nakago, so while there is no gap near the tsuba and seppa, the tsuba can slide slightly from side to side. Please refer to the photos for detailed condition. The display stand shown in the images is not included.
In the images, the saya appears reddish, but the actual color is slightly darker.
Due to size regulations, this item cannot be shipped to Spain. We kindly ask residents of Spain to refrain from bidding.
