Megateuthis is a jurassic genus of belemnites (mesozoic cephalopods similar in appearance to squids) whose remains have been found in European and Asian rocks.
These remains consist on guards, a conical remnant of the shell placed on the top of the animal's body.
Megateuthis guards can reach 45-60cm in length, making this belemnite the largest of them all: although a bit difficult to estimate based only on the guard, Megateuthis total length is thought to range between 2.5 and 3m.
With the set of hooked arms characteristic of belemnites, Megateuthis must have been a formidable predator in jurassic waters.
Belemnites are probably the most well known extinct cephalopod after the ammonites.
They lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and are fairly common fossils found throughout the world.
They had a hard, internal, cone shaped structure that is often preserved as a fossil though it is not technically a shell.
They had 10 arms but unlike modern squid these arms had small hooks instead of suckers.
Specimen is 20 cm a true monster!
