Nato nel 1899, Harold Benjamin Burdekin studiò alla Rugby School. All'età di 17 anni si arruolò nella Royal Field Artillery e prestò servizio militare negli ultimi anni della Grande Guerra. Ritornato alla vita civile, intraprese la carriera di fotografo professionista e aprì uno studio a Reigate, che pare fosse al 20 di West Street. Divenne un Associate della Royal Photographic Society e un Fellow dell'Institute of British Photographers, pubblicando una serie di libri di grande successo sui suoi lavori durante gli anni '30. Il suo lavoro fu molto apprezzato e presentato in mostre internazionali. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Harold Burdekin divenne un Fire Guard. Dopo essere sopravvissuto al servizio militare nella Grande Guerra, fu ucciso da una bomba volante che colpì Reigate il 22 luglio 1944.
La fotografia notturna come idioma a sé stante iniziò con George Brassaï che raffigurò la vita notturna delle strade di Parigi, pubblicando "Paris de Nuit" nel 1932, cui su ispirò Burdekin qualche anno dopo proprio nella sua serie di notturni su Londra.

From a personal collection, splendid and very rare original photoengraving by Harold Burdekin (Sheffield 1899 - Reigate 1944) from 1934 entitled: - Three Temples (The National Gallery, The Coliseum and St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square)- taken from the London Night series, and printed beautifully in Dark Blue Ink on J R Jones handmade paper.

The photo is sold including its passepartout and certificate of authenticity.
The frame is not part of the lot and is not sold together with the photo!

Born in 1899, Harold Benjamin Burdekin was educated at Rugby School. At the age of 17 he joined the Royal Field Artillery and served in the later years of the Great War. Upon returning to civilian life, he embarked on a career as a professional photographer and opened a studio in Reigate, reportedly at 20 West Street. He became an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and a Fellow of the Institute of British Photographers, publishing a series of best-selling books of his work during the 1930s. His work was highly regarded and exhibited internationally. During the Second World War, Harold Burdekin served as a Fire Guard. After surviving his military service in the Great War, he was killed by a flying bomb that hit Reigate on 22 July 1944.
Night photography as an idiom in its own right began with George Brassaï who depicted the nightlife of the streets of Paris, publishing "Paris de Nuit" in 1932, which inspired Burdekin a few years later in his series of nocturnes of London.
