【Product details】

This elegant set features a Meiji period or Later inro (traditional Japanese case) with a matching netsuke (toggle). The inro showcases exquisite maki-e lacquer work depicting a serene landscape scene. The exterior is adorned with gold powder mixed with lacquer, intricately illustrating a coastal vista with a boat, rower, pine trees along the shore, a pier, distant mountains, and clouds. These elements are skillfully rendered using maki-e techniques and gold leaf application. The interior boasts a full nashiji finish, creating a subtle, pear-skin-like texture.

The accompanying netsuke is a small circular piece with an inlaid metal design featuring a cuckoo and the moon. In Japanese symbolism, the cuckoo often represents the arrival of summer and is associated with melancholy beauty in poetry. The moon adds a sense of tranquility and completeness to the scene.

Maki-e, a prized Japanese decorative technique, involves sprinkling gold or silver powder onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using metal flakes to achieve a shimmering, textured surface reminiscent of pear skin.

Please note: Due to age, the inro shows some wear, patina, discoloration, and minor lacquer chips. The netsuke exhibits some discoloration, stain, and small scratches. Kindly review the provided photos to assess the condition.

Dimensions of Inro: approx. H 10.8 cm W 7 cm D 2.8 cm
