This exquisite piece is a natsume (tea caddy) crafted by a skilled Kaga Maki-e artist, Maruyama Seikou. Originating from the Kaga region in Ishikawa Prefecture, Kaga Maki-e is a traditional lacquerware technique that began in the early Edo period. It involves sprinkling gold or silver powder onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs.

The natsume features a stunning black lacquer base adorned with maki-e depictions of chrysanthemum and paulownia motifs. The chrysanthemums symbolize longevity and rejuvenation, while the paulownia is a symbol of prosperity and resilience. Small squares of gold leaf are scattered across the paulownia leaves, adding a refined accent to the design. The interior is finished with a nashiji (pear-skin ground), a maki-e technique that uses gold flakes to create a textured surface.

The craftsmanship of Kaga Maki-e is characterized by the meticulous application of gold powder, which is polished repeatedly to achieve a three-dimensional effect. This process imparts depth, perspective, and a luxurious finish to the lacquerware.

The piece bears the artist's signature on the bottom, and the original wooden box is also marked with the artist’s name and seal. There is some wear and discoloration due to age. Please refer to the photos to confirm the condition.
