Zodiac - Zodiac Aerospace GMT - Män - 1960-1969

BACKGROUND HISTORY: Zodiac is one of the swiss brand companies that founded by Ariste Calame in 1882 at small town Le Locle, Switzerland. He was actually from the family of master watch makers in that era. Following this father steps, he decided to setup his own watch workshop aimed to create his own timepiece. Earlier, the company being named as ‘Ariste Calame’ and later changed to ‘Zodiac’. The first production of Zodiac watch was in 1908. Later his son took over the business. In the late 1920s, Zodiac first pocket watch was successfully producing its own pocket watch and launched to the public. Few years after, the brand started to design and produce its first automatic sport watch, which was the famous Zodiac Autographic. Zodiac Autographic, though the watch itself looks classic rather than sport watch, was the brand first watch with the power reserve indicator on the dial and equipped with thick crystal with water and shock resistant case. It was pretty amazing that in 1930, Zodiac had started to experiment and successfully produced water resistant watch. In the early era of 1950s, the brand again evolved by introducing purposely built ‘Diving Watch’ that being marketed to mass market, the Zodiac Sea Wolf. This model was announced at the Basel Fair in 1953. It was rated to be able to sustain 10 ATM (339 feet) water resistance. Coincidentally, Blancpain 50 fathoms was also announced in this fair with the water resistance rating of 300 feet. In the same year, Rolex has also announced the famous Rolex Submariner Reference 6204 that rated at 100 meters water resistance. The successor of Sea Wolf is Super Sea Wolf which was launched in early 1970s. Super Sea Wolf has the improve water resistance due to the improved crown and case back design, which able to sustain water resistance ranging from 200 to 750 meters. Due to the solid built of this ‘Tool’ watch, U.S. Navy Seals even has adopted and made use of this watch. From the success launched of Sea Wolf divers, Zodiac had also experimented with adding more complications to the watch by adding 24 hours hand to the watch. Overall, the design was following closely to Sea Wolf’s case but instead of elapsed time or count down bezel for diving, the brand replaced it with 24 Hours bi-directional Bezel and additional unique red 24 Hour Hand. There was slogan being used during the launch of this reference “Twice as much time for your money”, which referring to the ability of the watch to track two time zones. For GMT complication watch, the brand selected the name of the watch as ‘Zodiac Aerospace GMT’. Aerospace GMT watch was being produced with 35mm case size and 11mm thickness, which was huge for sport watch in that era. The AeroSpace GMT was also produced in two types of two-tone Bezel, the famous Pepsi (blue and red) bezel and Black Grey Bezel, both make use of bakelite above the bezel insert. The most coveted one was the one with “Pepsi” bezel and rarer. The model with bakelite bezel was first produced around 1968. This was the reference 752-934 that use Cal 75 movement. The later design of Aerospace GMT will have similar glossy dial design, but it will have wider and flatter hour markers and equipped with caliber 75B. The different color on the bezel was used to tell AM and PM time in 24 Hours. The bezel itself is quite unique because there is bakelite inlay on top of the aluminum insert. The current example here is the one with Black Grey bezel. For Aerospace GMT model, Zodiac has totally redesigned the dial, which is totally different with Sea Wolf. Aerospace dial is glossy black type with fat silver markers and luminous plots on the outer edge of the dial on top of the hour marker. I like the silver dial notation that printed on the dial and choice of font is also very unique which resembles to calligraphy fonts. There are few vintage Zodiac Aerospace GMT models ever produced and any of them will be a good asset for collection. However, the grail is of course the one with 2 tone Bakelite bezel. There was still possibility to get the one that come with box and paper, however it will demand high price for sure. In 2019, Zodiac has reissued the famous Aerospace GMT, Reference ZO9400, in 2 different dial and bezel types, each was only limited to 182 pieces. The reissue come with black and grey bezel just like the original vintage model and the new baby blue and burnt orange bezel, which is to replace the Pepsi bezel of the vintage model. These reissue models equipped with venerable Swiss ETA 2893-2 automatic true GMT movement, whereby GMT hand could be adjusted separately. In the past, Cal 75 doesn’t allow 24 Hours GMT hand being independently adjusted. WHY THIS WATCH Zodiac Aerospace GMT reference 752-934 was one of the most famous timepieces ever produced by Zodiac in the past. Though there were many variants being produced, the grail of the Aerospace GMT is the one come with two tones Bakelite bezel. The current example equipped with gray and black bezel, with gray represent morning time and the black represent night time. The bezel is bidirectional type and it could be set to work together red GMT hands that represent 24 hour time. Besides, the bezel could also be turned to work with the hour hands to represent the second time zone. It is not a huge watch as it comes with 36mm diameter case size, which was the man size during 1960s. The case design is same as the diving series, Sea Wolf series with non screw down crown at 3:00. As the GMT watch, it comes with additional red hand that non-adjustable and will only finish one round tour in 24 hours time. The GMT hand is in sync with the hour hand. The use of red color as GMT hand add special touch on the watch, which is just like strawberry on top of the cheesecake. It is indeed a very cool, funky, and fashion that even will not get outdated even nowadays. This current reference is equipped with Zodiac caliber 75, which was produced only few years during the early production before it is being replaced with Cal 76. Cal 75 is a famous with robust and strong movement with the added 24 Hour complications with hacking mechanism, but there is no quickset for the date. It was an automatic movement equipped with 17 jewels and beating at rate of 21,600 Bph. No wonder, most of Zodiac Caliber 75 are still working fine nowadays even though it was already over 50 years. -------------- FREE SHİPPİNG ---------— Service - tested and working Working perfectly.
