First edition, and first printing of the world-famous account of Scott's Antarctic travels and discoveries. Introduction by Sir J. M Barrie. Illustrated with tissue guarded portrait photogravure frontispiece of Scott, 4 tissue guarded colour plates from watercolours by Edward Wilson, double page plate, 28 black and white full page plates, a facsimile note of the last words of Captain Scott’s journal, and folding map of the main Southern Journey at the end of the book.
Published by Smith, Elder, and Co., London, 1914. Publisher's original blue cloth with titles in gilt, and illustration of Scott to the upper board. Gilt lettering, and vignette of the 'Discovery' to the spine. Top page edge gilt.
Book Dimensions: 21 x 14 x 4 cm and Number of Pages: 440 including index
Condition
Firm and well bound copy. External covers in nice shape, with light wear to boards’ corners, and to head and foot of spine. Internally; in very good condition. No names or inscriptions. Pages are clean, with light foxing and spotting marks to free endpaper pages, and on the margin edges of some pages. All plates and maps are present and in very good condition (Please see pictures).
