An amazing, dated, fully restored wooden temple lantern 行灯 (andon) of the kakugata 角形-type, enclosed with fine washi paper. Constructed from indigenous sugi (cedar) wood with a dark brown lacquered finish that showcases a beautiful aged patina. The square lampshade has a removable front panel featuring charming lattice work, originally designed for candlelight but now equipped with a newly electrified CE-fitting, offering a warm, ambient glow when lit.
The lantern is surmounted by an arched handle, and the shade is supported by columns connected to a broad, tapered square base that includes two front drawers, traditionally used to store matches and such. One of the handles fitted with a hand-forged iron 'hirute'-shaped bail handle. The top op the base covered with an iron removable tray.
The left side of the drawer bears an inscription, which reads: "A peaceful day, August of Kaei 6, year of the ox" 嘉永六廿年八月大安日 (Anno 1853) and "Middle palace guard Motohashi Kisaki" 本橋喜兵衛, a rank from the ritsuryô system.
Dimensions:
Height 94.5 cm, Width 37.5 cm, Depth 37 cm.
The washi-paper has been fully restored, and the frame remains in excellent condition, with minimal signs of wear consistent with age, maintaining a lovely patina. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. No lamp bulbs included.
