Provenance From a private French collection and formerly in the ownership of a leading UK art dealer . Overall measurements with the frame are 78 cm x 59 cm x 6 cm and the painting itself measuring 56 cm x 38 cm Gabriel Griffon was a Toulouse school of painters and he achieved some acclaim as an Impressionist painter in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Griffon is probably best known for allegorical and genre paintings; his landscape and garden scenes and his ‘fêtes galantes’ are reminiscent of the 18th painter, Watteau, but interpreted in a fluid and ethereal post-Impressionist manner. His work is well collected and quite rarely comes to auction . An appreciated sculptor, working for a long time in Bordeaux, he then divided his life between Nice and Agen (his house at 17 rue Carnot became the Griffon Museum). He who at the beginning was only a Sunday painter quickly saw his reputation increase. Today, his work is in collections in Paris, London, New York, Boston and Geneva Gallery prices typically are in the several thousands of euros as research will show . His work also took influence from the work of Adolphe Monticelli and the painting being offered has that style and use of palette. A stunning painting with wonderful colours and tonality . Griffins artistic talents extended to bring a very well accomplished sculpture . His palette was exceptionally clear and fresh and his brushwork was subtle yet. Today, his works are in collections in Paris, London, New York, Boston and Geneva. Since 2015 the record price for this artist at auction is 4,937 USD for Nice Carnival around the Albert 1er garden with the Palais de la Jetée in the background, sold at Monte-Carlo Auction House in 2024. Condition report . The original canvas had been lined ; most likely about 30 years ago . The painting g is in good condition for its antiquity. The 19th century gilt French frame is offered as a gift . Please note :
