Béla Markup (1873-1945) Hungarian sculptor. He studied in Budapest at the National Hungarian Pattern Drawing School with Alajos Strobl. He achieved his first great success with two stone lions on the steps of the Parliament. His animal sculptures made him famous even later. Very few people made representations, Kohász and Bányász are his works. On the website of the University of Sopron, it can be read that the original statue stood at the entrance to the academy's exhibition at the Millennium World Exhibition in 1896, together with its companion, the metallurgical statue, and then moved to Miskolc in 1959. The statues can also be found in Kazincbarcika, they were inaugurated in 2005 in memory of the deceased miners, although the tools disappeared from their hands.
In this statue, the miner is not holding a coal pick, but an ore pick
