Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant with Five Wounds of Christ
Circa 5th-6th century AD
This bronze cross pendant features a flat section body with arms slightly flaring outward, each decorated with punched circle and dot motifs arranged to form a cross. The suspension loop at the top allows for wearing as a pendant.
The Five Wounds of Christ refer to the injuries inflicted upon Jesus during his crucifixion, as described in the Christian tradition. These wounds include the piercing of Jesus' hands and feet by nails, and the wound on his side inflicted by a spear. According to Christian belief, these wounds symbolize the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus for the redemption of humanity's sins. Depictions of the Five Wounds are common in Christian art and iconography, often represented as wounds marked by blood or as stylized symbols.
