Born in Zaandam, Mauve moved to Haarlem at 16, apprenticing under cattle and horse painters. He painted en plein air with Paul Gabriel and spent time in Oosterbeek. In 1871, he established a studio in The Hague and taught Van Gogh. By 1885, he had moved to Laren. Mauve's work gained wide recognition and remains highly sought after.
