Arkadiy Kurta (1977) - 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (2017)
Arkadiy Kurta grew up in the small city of Sumy in Ukraine and lived in Germany for two years while he attended school. Prior to becoming a photographer, he attended the Banking Academy of Finance in Kiev for six years. Whilst studying at the academy he became interested in photography after he was presented with an inexpensive camera as a gift. The following year, at twenty-nine years old, he enrolled in the Kiev School of Photography and a year later he opened his first studio in his hometown. In 2017 he was inducted into The National Union of Photographic Artists of Ukraine.
Arkadiy has the ability to tell powerful stories and create intimate spaces in the middle of the city without the need of gimmickry. He does not treat the women he photographs as sexual objects nor do his images exploit the conflicts between art and eroticism but always portray 'Art' as the arbiter for expression and desire.
