The Justino Henriques e Filhos wine company was founded in 1870 and is one of Madeira's largest wine producers. In 1981, Sigfredo da Costa Campos bought the company from Companhia Vinicola da Madeira, subsequently buying the company's shares as well. The company is currently owned by La Martiniquaise, a French company with a major influence on exports to the French market.

The history of Madeira Wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira Island, the vines are cultivated in small earthen enclosures, known as "poios", supported by earthen walls on the slopes of the mountains, which are often difficult to access. Madeira Island's unique soil and climate, as well as the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to Madeira Wine's unrivalled distinction throughout the ages.In addition to these factors, there are 30 grape varieties used to produce this fortified wine, the most noble of which are Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malmsey.
