Scrimshaw is a miniature etching and engraving method in animal materials, such as ivory, horn or bone.
The term Scrimshaw comes from the era of the whalers who, in the 18th and 19th centuries, whale bonesed with the decoration of the teeth and their free time at home. They prefer to "scrimmten" on the teeth of the sperm whale, which were found in whaling as a waste product. Most of the works on Pottwalzähnen and whale bones originate from North American whalers.
