History: The Hutschenreuther porcelain company was opened in 1814. Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther wanted to open the first privately owned porcelain factory in Germany. He started looking for an ideal location in Bavaria. After a long search, he chose a piece of land in the Bavarian town of Hohenburg. There, he built the first Hutschenreuther factory. To improve the quality of its product, Carolus called for artists, artisans and sculptors from all over the European continent. Focusing primarily on quality and design, Hutschenreuther grew to become a competitive company that produced tableware perfect for fine dining. In 1857, the son of Carolus, Lorenz Hutschenreuther opened another factory to produce porcelain in Selb. Lorenz marketed its table sets aggressively. Hutschenreuther Selb became the most notable name as a result of its manager’s business experience. Hutschenreuther Selb became the first German company to be able to compete with companies like Haviland and Wedgwood. Lorenz had not cooperated with his father and the two companies would remain completely independent and in open competition with each other for more than a century. In 1917, Hutschenreuther Selb began producing figurines by purchasing the artistic division of Paul Muller. The ceo of Hutschenreuther, Emil Mundel, was the driving force behind the acquisition of the Muller assets. After acquiring sculptors and skilled workers, Hutschenreuther began to solicit its designs for the sculptures and dishes of Selb Technical School of Porcelain. In 1926, the artistic division of the company had gained wide acclaim and its porcelain figurines were highly sought after. Richelieu of Hutschenreuther Selb has continued to grow by buying goods of competing factories throughout Germany. In 1909, Hutschenreuther bought Altrohlau. Later the company would purchase Arzburg and Tirschenreuth. Hutschenreuther has produced many of its most famous models in the first half of the 21st century, including Racine (1900), Richelieu (1929), Blue Onion (1930) and Maple Leaf (1940). In 1969, the company expanded to include several other factories. In the same year, the company assets of Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther of 1814 were acquired by Hutschenreuther Selb. After more than a century of competition, the two companies became one. The newly merged company continued to produce fine porcelain figurines and chine. Today, the company uses the lion and the circle as a trademark and continues to produce sculptures, ornaments and dishes.
