Ebru Art
Ebru is the embrace, fusion and dance of colors on a condensed liquid with unlimited changes. What has made Ebru Art mysterious for centuries is that it is a paper painting art that pushes the artist to overcome all the mysteries and chaos of the world at the head of the ebru boat; and that this art is a fluid, always dynamic, variable, self-exceeding infinite technique that gives the opportunity to try. Ebru is considered and exhibited as a work of art in its own right, along with illumination and calligraphy, on book pages, murakka edges, bindings, writing spaces and seats. It is impossible to say for sure today when Ebru art, one of the most important of Central Asian Art and paper decoration arts, has been known. No such document has survived to the present day. We see ebru as the side paper (the paper that connects the cover and the book) even in old book bindings. It is also possible to come across ebru papers stuck to the sills around the inscriptions in an old murakka. However, even if the date of writing of these works is known, they are not considered as a document about ebru for us. Such old manuscripts have been repaired and renewed several times. The oldest ebru paper is a Malik-i Deylemi text from 962 AH (1554). Since the text was written on light ebru, the history of the ebru paper was learned from the date of the text. Ebru Art has been called Turkish Paper or Turkish Marble Paper in the West. Europeans call ebru paper marble paper. Cloud-like color clusters form on the ebru paper. That is why the word Ebri, which means cloud-like, was used. Famous ebru artists known in our history are Hatib Mehmet Efendi, Şeyh Sadık Efendi, Hezarfen Edhem Efendi and Necmeddin Okyay.
