Tsunetaro Futagami is a Ro-gata-shi from Toyama.
He was born in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, a city of traditional crafts. His works are full of elegance and dignity, and are highly praised for their fascination of the viewer, and are highly regarded as living national treasures in the industry.
Ro-gata is a type of casting technique. First, a mold is used separately from the raw mold to make the hollow part of the casting, called the core, and the surface is covered with a mixture of beeswax and pine resin to make the original mold. The surface is then coated with mud mixed with clay juice, allowed to dry, and heated to melt the wax and create a cavity to be used as a mold. The mold is then filled with molten metal, and when cooled, the mold is broken to complete the process.
This is Tsunetaro Futagami's main production technique, and he has left many works in the genre of copper art works, vases, and Buddhist altarware.
This is a powerful yet graceful incense burner from the period before and after Tsunetaro Futagami's death.
