Electric Light Orchestra ‎– A New World Record

The album was the first of the band to hit the UK album charts and, with a record at number 6, is considered the band's commercial breakthrough in their home country. The album sold over seven million times.

Jeff Lynne allegedly regards this album and its successor Out of the Blue as the high points in the band's history.
However, it is better to go for A New World Record over its successor as it is a more humble creation full of great songs that are even better produced.

A New World Record begins with the opulently orchestrated "Tightrope" heralding the perfect production of this album, and features seven of the best songs the group has ever made.
The Beatles influence, while there, is developed to a very high degree of sophistication and on Lynne's own terms, rather than imitating certain songs. "Telephone Line" is perhaps the best Lennon-McCartney collaboration that has never been, lyrically and in a way that manages to capture elements of Revolver and the Beatles without ever imitating them.
The second side of the original LP began with "So Fine", which appears like the perfect pop synthesis of guitar, percussion and orchestral sounds and embodies exactly what Lynne had planned with Roy Wood at the time ELO was conceptualized.
From then on the album swings through pounding rock numbers like "Livin 'Thing" and "Do Ya", interrupted by lyrical pieces like "Above the Clouds" a great album
