A refined antique Suzuribako硯箱 (writing box) with excellent craftsmanship and beautiful plum blossom designs by gold and silver maki-e techniques.

The outer surface of this Suzuribako shows a black-lacquered lid decorated with gold and silver taka maki-e patterns for vivid plum blossom. These patterns were created with great precision and detail, capturing the beauty of flower in every nuance. The gold and silver lacquer was applied with great skill, creating an effect of depth and three-dimensionality to the floral motif.

The interior of the Suzuribako are coated with nashiji lacquer, a traditional Japanese finish that creates a thick gold dust effect over the entire surface. This finish offers a charming contrast to the glossy black exterior.

The box with two fitted trays, one is housing an inkstone 硯 (suzuri) and a round copper water dropper水滴 (suiteki). the other one is used to put brushes, knife and inks. The back of the inkstone is inscribed with "Made by Murakami村上, of Takada-juku, Sakushu,"

Sakushu作州 is another name for Mimasaka Province美作国, which is now in the northeastern part of Okayama Prefecture. Takada is the old name for the Katsuyama district of Maniwa City, and inkstone materials are mined from the so-called "Suzureyama" near the scenic Kanba Falls.
The oldest existing Takada inkstone is one dated 1643 (Kan'ei 20) in the early Edo period, bearing the inscription "Murakami family of Takada-ju in Sakushu," and it seems that they were actively produced around this time, as inkstone makers are often mentioned in the temple's death registers.

Techniques: Nashiji and Maki-e

Dimensions: 24 x 21 x 4.2 cm

Good condition, there are stains, scratches, chips and wear off of paints due to aging and using, please also take a look at the listed photos for a reference.
