Feathered Fabrics Room Divider
(2019)
Room Divider with handwoven ostrich feather fabric with interlocking California yellow cedar wooden frames
H190 x W140 x D60 cm
This functional textile furniture piece uses designer Pascale Theron’s 'Feathered Fabrics'. The 'Feathered Fabrics' are handwoven textiles made from ostrich feathers. The ostrich feather was once a highly valued commodity coming from the 150 year old ostrich feather industry in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. These pieces go beyond the aesthetic and decorative and return the ostrich feather to its former glory in a more integrated and practical way. The soft, warm, sound-buffering and incredibly light weight textural qualities of the 'Feathered Fabrics' mean it can be used in a variety of practical ways, making functional textiles.
The Feathered Fabrics Room Divider sets these 'Feathers Fabrics' in a handmade wooden frame made from California yellow cedar. The piece mimics how the fabric would look if it were stretched on a loom. The wooden parts interlock together using dove-tail joints and the fabric holds the whole piece together using its own tension. No glue or nails are used in the piece.
The Feathered Fabrics Room Divider stands hinged in a ‘Z’ formation with all three panels on feet. The panels can alternatively also be combined in standing pairs or even stand alone too. One could also use the separate pieces as wall art.
This hand-crafted interior furniture piece with its delicately transparent fabrics brings some movement, privacy, tactility and warmth to the modern home.
