Item Description:

This is a set of three wooden clappers used in traditional Japanese performing arts.

1. Kokiriko Sasara

This traditional Japanese musical instrument, called "Sasara," is used in the famous folk dance and song "Kokiriko" from Gokayama, Etchu. It is made from selected hinoki cypress wood and consists of 108 wooden slats, symbolizing the removal of worldly desires.

Historically, the Sasara was used as a purification tool, and its sound quality depends on the intricate weaving of its strings. Each piece is crafted with care by skilled artisans. Due to its unique design, the Sasara is increasingly sought after as a decorative interior item.

The "Kokiriko" song is considered Japan's oldest folk song, passed down for over 1,400 years and registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1953. The entire Gokayama region is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Size: 2.3 x 66 x 6 cm
Weight: 298g

2. Naruko (鳴子) × 2 pieces

Naruko (鳴子) is a traditional Japanese wooden clapper used in various cultural and festive events, particularly in the Yosakoi Festival, which originates from Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Naruko consists of small wooden slats attached together, often with a handle, and is shaken to produce a clacking sound.

Originally, naruko was used in agriculture to scare away birds, but now it is most commonly associated with the Yosakoi dance, an energetic and modern festival dance that blends traditional Japanese dance styles with contemporary music. The use of naruko in Yosakoi adds rhythm and visual appeal to the performances, making it a significant part of the festival and a symbol of the vibrant culture of Kochi and other regions in Japan where Yosakoi has spread.

Size: 19 × 8 × 3 cm (For one piece)
Weight: 56g (For one piece)

Pen is nice, but could have bought a new (!) one more than € 50,- cheaper in Europe. My mistake! The extra costs were for sending + customs + refill (there was nothing but the pen).
