ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mu'tasim, AH 218-227 / AD 833-842. Silver Dirham struck in Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad) in AH 225 = 839/40.

The obverse bears the inscription: لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له ('There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him'). In the margin, it reads: بسم الله ضرب هذا الدرهم بمدينة السلام سنة خمس وعشرين ومائتين ('In the name of Allah. This dirham was struck in Madinat al-Salam in the year 225'). The outer margin features the verse: لله الأمر من قبل ومن بعد ويومئذ يفرح المؤمنون بنصر الله ('To Allah belongs the command before and after, and on that day the believers will rejoice with the help of Allah' – Qur'an 30:4-5).

The reverse contains the inscription: لله محمد رسول الله المعتصم بالله ('To Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Al-Mu'tasim billah'). The margin includes the phrase: محمد رسول الله أرسله بالهدى ودين الحق ليظهره على الدين كله ولو كره المشركون ('Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may make it overcome all religions, even though the unbelievers may dislike it'). A-226. Scarce.
