An amazing arched oblong kanban 看板 (shop sign) featuring a portrait of the revered Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, commonly known as Daruma 達磨 (482-539). The figure gazes upward with an open mouth, draped in a loose red robe. The sign is paired with two carved inscriptions painted in green. It features four rectangular indentations, and the sides are equipped with old mounting elements
Was formerly used outside of a teahouse.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/ Early Meiji period).
Approx. dimensions:
Height 35 cm, Length 188.5 cm, Depth 3.5 cm.
Considering its age, the sign is in very good condition, showing expected traces of wear from its original placement outdoors. It has developed a great aged patina, with the wood relief showing beautiful signs of age. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
