A stunning wooden ishô'dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers), in two sections, fitted with hand-forged iron hardware and with a little secret. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.
Made of indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood varnished in a sought after warm brown hue, a colour that we like to call ‘golden oak’.
The upper part configured with two full-width drawers, and the lower part with four drawers of different size. Behind the small drawer in the lower right corner, a hidden compartment is discreetly concealed.
Equipped with large decorative circular lock plates adorned with raised knobs shaped like chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku). Paired with sturdy iron ‘gunbai’-shaped bail handles with elongated escutcheons.
The smooth-running drawers are deep and spacious, providing ample storage capacity.
The sides are equipped with ‘pole-carrying’-handles for easy transport, and locking the upper part in place. The lower part also fitted with ‘warabite’-shaped totte (grip handles).
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).

Height 106.8 cm (T 51.6 cm, B 55.2 cm), Width 87.8 cm, Depth 42.5 cm.
The ishô’dansu is in a very good restored condition. No key included. Please see the photos for a condition reference.
