This exquisite antique Meiji period or Later Suzuribako calligraphy box set showcases the intricate beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The set includes a calligraphy box, an inkstone, and a water dropper in the shape of an ox.

The lid of the Suzuribako is adorned with chrysanthemum motifs in high-relief maki-e against a stunning nashiji background, creating a captivating visual effect. The sides of the box are fully covered in nashiji, a technique that uses gold or silver flecks to achieve a shimmering, pear-skin-like texture. Inside the lid, maki-e depictions of Japanese pampas grass and a water dropper with a full moon in lead are elegantly presented, each symbolizing autumn and the beauty of nature.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs.

The box shows signs of wear and tear, including some scratches, small marks, stains, and chips in the lacquer, due to its age. Additionally, there are a few cracks in the corners inside the box, and one of the two wooden stoppers on the lid's underside is cracked and slightly raised. The lacquer on the underside of the lid also has a few cracks. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of its condition.
