This byōbu folding screen painting vividly portrays the loyal retainer “Akechi Hidemitsu” (also known as “Akechi Mitsuharu” or “Akechi Samanosuke”), who served the famous samurai warlord “Akechi Mitsuhide.” In June 1582, during the fateful “Battle of Yamazaki,” Mitsuhide’s forces were defeated by the mighty “Toyotomi Hideyoshi.” Upon receiving the dire news, Hidemitsu left the fortified Azuchi Castle, intending to reunite with the remaining troops at his stronghold, Sakamoto Castle.
With the formidable Toyotomi forces in hot pursuit, Hidemitsu found himself surrounded, his men scattered, and allies nowhere in sight. His sole companion in this desperate moment was his trusted steed, “Ookage.” Recognizing the impossibility of escaping by land, he placed his unwavering faith in his beloved horse.
In a breathtaking act of bravery, Hidemitsu and Ookage plunged into the vast expanse of Lake Biwa, which spread out like a boundless ocean. Cutting through the choppy waters with relentless determination, they aimed for the distant shores of Sakamoto Castle. With eyes blazing with resolve, Hidemitsu pressed forward, battling the elements in a final bid for survival.
Though he eventually reached Sakamoto Castle, the battle had already been lost. Surrounded by the encroaching Toyotomi army, Hidemitsu chose the path of honor. In a poignant and tragic finale, he ended his life alongside his wife and children.
This painting captures a thrilling and unforgettable scene, showcasing the valor and indomitable spirit of the samurai.
