The family name 'Burmester' comes from the German word „Burgmeester“ (Mayor) - as the family came from the small town of Moelln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash established a grain trading business in London under the name Burmester & Nash. In 1750 the company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia and started shipping Port to the British Isles and the rest of Europe. The company was very active in London. The commercial and financial activities of the Burmester family were highly valued in London. For example, the most famous street in the Wimbledon district is 'Burmester Road'. Harvest The grapes are picked by hand at the right time and then destemmed. Vinification After careful skin soaking and fermentation, brandy is added and this fortified wine matures in wooden barrels. Bottling takes place between the second and third year after harvest.
