Original incunable woodcut sheet CXXIII (123) from the Nuremberg Chronicle by Hartmann Schedel, the first German edition from 1493, beautifully colored and EXCEPTIONALLY GOLD RAISED!

An incunabula (cradle print) is a book printed in Europe before January 1, 1501, when the printing press was still in its infancy, and the text of which is set in movable type. They are now rarely seen on the market.

Hartmann Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) is one of the most famous and best illustrated incunabula. The beautiful woodcuts were made by Michael Wohlgemut (1434/37-1519) and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1450-1494), a teacher of Albrecht Dürer. Dürer probably also contributed to the execution of many of the woodcuts for this incunabula.

The beautifully colored and partly gold-enhanced woodcuts from Folio CXXIII show on the recto five different Roman Emperors: Tacitus, Florianus, Probus, Carus, and Diocletian

On the verso side 5 beautiful illustrations are showen:
1. Adauctus, a Roman patrician who converted an entire city, leading Diocletian to order the city burned. Adauctus was martyred by decapitation after his eyes were gouged out.
2. Alexander, a soldier of the Theban legions who preached Christianity and was decapitated.
3. Barbara, a noble virgin placed in a tower by her father to prevent her conversion. After becoming a Christian, she was tortured and beheaded by her father, who was subsequently struck by heavenly fire.
4. Anastasia, a noblewoman who helped Christians, imprisoned and tortured by her husband Publius.
5. Claudius and Symphorianus were imprisoned, beaten with scorpions, and finally thrown into the sea on Diocletian’s orders.
6. Crispinus and Crispinianus, were tortured and beheaded in Soissons, they were recognied for their steadfast faith and received the crown of martyrdom.

This is not a facsimile edition, but an original sheet printed in the 15th century - so 531 years old!
Rare in colored version.

Dimensions: 40.3 x 27.4 cm

Good condition, slightly thin spot at the bottom in the margin.
