Château Léoville Barton was born from the division of Domaine de Léoville in 1826, when Hugh Barton, an Irishman already owner of Château Langoa in Saint-Julien, bought part of the vineyard. This is how a new big name in Bordeaux is born, alongside the two other plots resulting from the sale, Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Poyferré. Today, almost two centuries later, the estate still belongs to the Barton family, an unusual situation in Bordeaux where transactions have always been going well. Becoming owner in 1983, Anthony Barton succeeded in making people forget the difficult vintages of the Second World War and the period of decline of the 1970s, by signing a spectacular revival, particularly notable since 1985. A remarkable 2000 vintage inaugurated the 21st century in style, followed by a simply sublime 2005. Among the estate's many assets, a high proportion of old vines and the use of traditional wooden vats, deliberately preserved when most Bordeaux wines abandoned them in favor of the innovation of the time, the stainless steel vat. As the wine has neither a castle nor a cellar built on these lands, it is in Langoa Barton that the vinification and aging take place

The estate's wines offer an exuberant nose of black fruits (cherry, blackcurrant), spices, cedar wood and coffee. On the palate, they appear concentrated and distinguished, marked by powerful but very supple tannins, resulting in a superb velvety feel. Several years in the cellar are necessary for this great wine to flourish, with remarkable aging potential.
