Very fine Archaic Greek coin from Ionia, in Asia Minor.
Obv: Forepart of lion right, head left.
Rev: Stellate floral design; all within incuse square.

Miletos was one of the most powerful and influential cities of Ionia, renowned for its wealth, trade, and intellectual achievements. As a major port on the Aegean, it established numerous colonies, including Naucratis in Egypt and key Black Sea settlements. Miletos was a center of early Greek philosophy, home to the Milesian school with thinkers like Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, who pioneered natural science and rational inquiry. The city was also known for its advancements in urban planning, with Hippodamus of Miletos introducing grid-based city layouts. Its artistic and architectural contributions, including the development of the Ionic order, further shaped Greek culture.
