Jewel of French mineralogy, the Auvergne blue fluorite is sought after by collectors from all around the world.
The Marsanges fluorite mine in the Langeac coal and spath fluor district was operated by several companies from 1830 to 1975. It was famous for its huge 21m width main fluorite vein, the thickest in the whole mining district!
Good to excellent specimens were recovered in Marsanges during the mining period and after the shut down by local 'cristalliers'. Particularly, Marsanges has produced a few remarkable pockets of clear and lustrous blue fluorite, hence ranking among the best localities in the country for fluorite.
Here is a wonderful sky blue fluorite from Marsanges mine!
It displays sharp, delightful colour cubes up to 4.9 cm large, intertwined in a very unusually aesthetic architecture, free of any matrix or massive fluorite.
The crystals dramatically catch the light due to their size and thickness, making for a bright eye-catcher in any showcase.
Notice the slightly polysynthetic stepped growth visible over some of the faces, adding geometric lines and 'relief'.
Orange iron oxides, trapped at the joint between some cubes, add a hint of warm colour to the specimen.
A rare opportunity to obtain a fine sky blue fluorite from Marsanges!
