Provenance: The Brandt Family. Removed from Spout Farm, Groton signed lower middle right hand side

Overall size with the frame is 86cm 76cm x 6cm and the oval painting measured at 70cm x 60cm


Condition report: In excellent lined and cleaned condition. The paint surface is even and stable and the canvas is in good tension.

A very finely painted oval portrait of portrait of Elisabeth Brandt, nee Oesterreich (1835-1922) by the well- lusted German genre painter Carl Johann Lasch( 1822-1888) signed and dated '83.

Carl Johann Lasch (1822 Leipzig –1888 Moscow) was a German artist of historical paintings and portraits.

He was born in Leipzig. He attended the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. One of his teachers was Eduard Bendemann. He later attended the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. There he studied under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Wilhelm von Kaulbach.As started Lasch was the pupil of Beudemann at the Academy in Dresden and of Schnorr and Kaultach in Munich. After travelling to Vienna, St Petersburg, Moscow and Paris, he settled in Munich in 1860, where he became a teacher.
