【Product details】

This exquisite natsume tea caddy, crafted by Arai Masaharu II during the Showa era, features six fan-shaped panels on a glossy black lacquer surface, each decorated with maki-e, a technique where gold or silver powder is delicately sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate patterns. Some of the fan designs are set against a luxurious nashiji background, using gold flecks to achieve a distinctive pear-skin texture that adds depth and elegance.

Each fan depicts a unique motif with deep symbolic meaning: Mount Fuji with pine represents strength and longevity; bamboo signifies resilience; plum blossoms evoke renewal; willow with a stream and small bridge symbolizes tranquility; chrysanthemums convey nobility; and the Genji wheel, inspired by Heian-period carriages, signifies grace and refinement.

Arai Masaharu II is part of a distinguished family of lacquer artisans spanning three generations. His grandfather, Arai Masashō, established the family’s legacy in high-quality lacquerware production, founding Arai Masashōdō in 1958 after training under the renowned lacquerware master Mukai Shuhō.

This tea caddy comes with its original wooden box, signed and sealed by the artist. The piece is in excellent condition with no noticeable flaws. Please refer to the photos for additional details.

Lot de masques noh conforme et bien emballés/protégés. Les frais en plus, VAT et dédouanement, corsent sérieusement la note (30% en plus des 9% de catawiki) mais le vendeur n'y est pour rien !
