Roerich
Articles Vsev. Ivanov and E. Gollerbach. Part 1 [And the only one]
- Riga: Roerich Museum, 1939.
190, [2] p.: ill. 34x26 cm.
In publisher's fabric binding. In a very good condition.
This publication was prepared by the Roerich Museum in Riga and was originally intended as a bibliophile edition - a limited edition and of very high quality.
Work on the monograph on Roerich began in 1937. It was planned to include significant works about the artist’s activities at home and abroad in two parts, as well as numerous reproductions of his paintings. Only the first part of the book managed to come out. Due to the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent change of power in the Baltic states, the second part never saw the light of day. Due to military events, most of the circulation was not sold, and after the war the book was completely withdrawn from sale. A small remnant of the circulation was destroyed in 1949 at the Sloka paper mill.
The first part included articles by Vsevolod Ivanov and Erich Hollerbach selected by Nicholas Roerich himself and reproductions of 123 paintings, including 46 color ones. The cover, covered with linen fabric with a laconic inscription, was also invented by Roerich himself. The artists Ludolf Liberts and Albert Prande, a student of Roerich, worked on the design of the book. The cliches for printing illustrations were specially delivered from the New York Roerich Museum and the Prague Museum of Russian Art. In terms of printing reproduction, the illustrations in this publication are considered one of the best.
