【Product details】

This Noh mask, created by the renowned mask artist Aoki Sadao, depicts the Uba (Elderly Woman), one of the significant masks used in Noh theater. Uba represents an elderly woman endowed with divine qualities and noble dignity, often appearing in roles beyond her literal meaning.

In the Noh play “Takasago”, the Uba mask is paired with the Ko-jō (Old Man) mask, symbolizing harmonious old age. Uba also takes on the role of deified beings, as seen in plays like "Settai" and "Taima," where she appears as an old nun. Her presence in Noh performances adds an element of sacred wisdom and spiritual transformation.

Aoki Sadao, the artist behind this piece, is based in Kumamoto City and is known for his exceptional craftsmanship in Noh mask production. In 2011, he established the NPO Yūgen no Hana, an organization dedicated to promoting Noh culture. Aoki is celebrated for his skill in faithfully reproducing ancient masks, preserving their historical authenticity through meticulous techniques.

This mask bears the artist's signature carved on the inner surface, with a handwritten signature and seal on the inside of the wooden box lid.

It shows some signs of wear, including discoloration, fading, and small scratches, consistent with age. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of the condition.
