He was born into a confectionery family in Kemanai in 1901. He was blessed with a natural talent for painting from an early age, and after initially studying under Sato Shiun, he became a student of Kawasaki Shoko, who gave him the name Shunko. He was a pupil of Kawasaki Shoko, and his works were exhibited at the Central Art Exhibition one after another, including ‘A Town in Tohoku’, which was selected for the Central Art Exhibition in 1923 (Taisho 12) and depicted a row of houses opposite his parents' house in Kemanai, as well as his favourite depictions of the lifestyle and customs of his home town of Kemanai.
