Uemura Shoko childhood name was Shintaro.
His mother was Uemura Shoen, a major modern beauty painter. His father is said to have been Shoen's teacher, the Japanese-style painter Shonen Suzuki, but Shoen, who was unmarried, did not say much. His son was also a Japanese-style painter, Uemura Atsuyuki.

He was also very particular about sketching birds, saying, “You cannot paint birds unless you understand their lives.” He traveled to India, Australia, Southeast Asia, and other places to observe birds.
He also built a large aviary on the grounds of his own studio in the suburbs of Nara City, where he kept more than 1,000 birds for lifelong observation.

This work is based on two cranes (Sou Kaku) painted by Shoko Uemura.
Sou Kaku is a composition favored since the Heian period (794-1185), in which two cranes are placed facing each other.
The crane is considered a bird of good luck, symbolizing longevity. A pair of cranes is also called “meoto zuru” (husband and wife cranes), and is revered as a symbol of amicability.
