In Tibetan, Yab-yum literally means 'man-woman', 'father-mother'. The statue shows the sexual entanglement that symbolizes the unification of polarities, the elimination of duality. In Tantric Buddhism this is the path to enlightenment. Man and woman sit in a sexually connected position with the heart chakras touching to allow heart connection to take place. This statue shows the unification of the Active force with Wisdom, the masculine with the feminine and shows that the opposition and separation of these two forces only exist in our imagination. Everything is essentially one.
