N.º 88815973
Hellenistic Pottery Unguentarium
Ca. 200 - 100 BC
A pottery unguentarium, a vessel that was specifically designed for holding unguent, a type of perfumed oil or balm used in ancient times. This container features an inverted piriform body with a small splayed foot, giving it a graceful and elegant form. The cylindrical neck of the vessel leads to an everted rim with a rounded lip, which is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The exterior of the unguentarium is adorned with a rich black glaze that covers most of the body, creating a striking contrast with the unglazed bottom of the vessel. The glaze is expertly applied, creating a smooth and lustrous surface that enhances the beauty of the piece. The use of a black glaze on the unguentarium was not only decorative but also practical, as it would have protected the contents of the vessel from light and air, helping to preserve the unguent's fragrance and quality. Unguents were an essential part of daily life in the Hellenistic world, used for a variety of purposes, including personal hygiene, medical treatments, and religious rituals. They were often made from natural ingredients, such as olive oil, beeswax, and various herbs and spices, and were highly valued for their luxurious and therapeutic properties. The use of unguents was particularly popular among women, who would apply them to their hair and skin as part of their beauty regimen. Cf. The Princetown University Art Museum, Object Number y454.
Size: L:75mm / W:40mm ; 50g
Provenance: Private London collection, B.A.; formerly in pre-2000 European collection.
