Nato nel Wisconsin nel 1868, Edward Sheriff Curtis si dedicò alla fotografia in tenera età. All’età di 17 anni, era apprendista in uno studio a St. Paul, Minnesota, e la sua vita sembrava prendere un corso familiare per un giovane con un mestiere commerciabile, finché la famiglia Curtis si trasferì a Seattle. Lì, Curtis sposò la diciottenne Clara Phillips, acquistò la propria macchina fotografica e una quota in uno studio fotografico locale. Proprio a Seattle nel 1895 Curtis realizzò il suo primo ritratto di un nativo americano: quello della principessa Angeline, la figlia maggiore del capo Sealth della tribù Duwamish.

From a personal collection, splendid and original photogravure by Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) from 1909 entitled: - Ka-yemo - taken from "The Flute of the Gods" and beautifully printed in sepia tones.

The photo is sold including its folder mat and certificate of authenticity.

Born in Wisconsin in 1868, Edward Sheriff Curtis took up photography at an early age. At age 17, he was an apprentice at a studio in St. Paul, Minnesota, and his life seemed to be taking a familiar course for a young man with a marketable trade, until the Curtis family moved to Seattle. There, Curtis married 18-year-old Clara Phillips, purchased his own camera, and a share in a local photography studio. It was in Seattle in 1895 that Curtis took his first portrait of a Native American: that of Princess Angeline, the eldest daughter of Chief Sealth of the Duwamish tribe.
In 1906, New York financier-philanthropist John Pierpont Morgan, owner of the Morgan Library, offered Curtis $75,000 to produce a work that, when completed, was to prove monumental: the series The North American Indian.
Between 1900 and 1930, Curtis traveled across the continent photographing more than seventy Native American tribes. The photographs depicted the daily activities, customs, and religions of a people he called "a vanishing race." To this end, Curtis often staged his subjects and staged scenes, mixing artifacts and tribal traditions to fit his romanticized vision of the people he studied.
The North American Indian, a twenty-volume work, was to contain 2,500 photographs of North American Indians. The first volume of the work - sold by pre-order - was published the following year; the last twenty-three years later, in 1930.
