An amazing lacquered wooden clothing rack 衣桁 (ikô), used for official displaying kimono.
The body of the rectangular detachable frame decorated with a repetitive design of crests 紋 (mon) depicting ‘5-7-5 paulownia’s’ 五七桐 (go-shichi kiri).
Rendered in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquer substrate 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi).
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).
Dimensions:
Height 168.2 cm, Width 181.1 cm, Depth 38.5 cm.
In a very good condition with small restorations. For a clear condition reference, please refer to the photos.
An ikô is a piece of interior furnishing documented to be used in Japan as early as the twelfth century. By the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, lacquer clothing stands had become a conventional item included in the bridal trousseau of wealthy women.
The kimono shown in the picture is included in this lot.
This stand will be shipped in individual parts and is easy to put together. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
