A beautifully illuminated manuscript page from an edition of Sa’adi’s works including the Bustan (Fruit Garden) and the Gulistan (Rose Garden) compiled as the ‘Kulliyat’. Sheikh Sa’adi (c1180-1292) is acknowledged as the greatest moral teacher in the Islamic Sufi tradition.
The text is nastaliq and in a fine hand. The arabesque decoration in the corner margins and the floral verticals is exquisite (see image 5c). The colours are fresh and the gold in very good condition. The red headings within the gold cartouche are exceptionally clear. This particular manuscript dates from around 1815.
