This auction presents a remarkable ukiyo-e woodblock print triptych created in 1880 (Meiji 13) by Morikawa Chikashige, also known as Utagawa Chikashige. This rare and historically significant artwork depicts three renowned Kabuki actors in their iconic roles: Sawamura Hyakunosuke (also known as Sawamura Tanosuke IV) as Shirabiyōshi, Ichikawa Danjūrō IX as Satō Masakiyo, and Nakamura Sōjūrō as Mashiba Hisayoshi.
Morikawa Chikashige, a disciple of Toyohara Kunichika, was a prominent ukiyo-e artist active during the late Edo to Meiji periods. Known by various artistic names including Kichō-sai, Kichō-rō, Ichibai-sai, and Ichibai-rō, he earned the title "the last master of actor prints" for his prolific and masterful depictions of Kabuki actors and beautiful women.
This triptych exemplifies Chikashige's expertise in capturing the essence of Kabuki theater, showcasing the actors' expressive poses, elaborate costumes, and distinct characters.
Please note that due to its age, the print shows signs of wear consistent with its vintage, including scratches, smudges, stains, creases, tears, small holes, and an area where the paper has thinned. Kindly review the provided photographs for condition.
