ABOUT KINOONI DIALOGUES COLLECTION:
The Kinooni palace on Lamu island in East Africa was once a governor’s residence which built in the 18th century. The designer is obsessed with the limestone mud walls and architectural decoration details of the ancient palace, and launched a contemporary dialogue with the distant land on the woven carpets. He inspred by African tribal elements and colors, as well as traditional Swahili design and technology, giving the rugs and tapestries a new form and exotic style. Each room of the house has 1 tapestry and 1 carpet dedicated to the function or story of that specific room.

TECHNICALS:
Kinooni Dialogues is a collection of finely handcrafted luxury carpets that bring Swahili-inspired designs into the remarkably refined craftsmanship hands of traditional Chinese weaving ands tufting masters. These expert craftsmen at Full, in Shanghai, used many different techniques, old and new, to create the interwoven layers as in the original vidaka ( the typical Swahili niche walls) of Kinooni House. They cut and looped, knotted, tufted, and shaved the shapes into the carpets to create a more 3d effect.
Mixing all these technics gives a very rich almost baroque feel to these carpets.

ABOUT KINOONI HOUSE:
Built in the early XVIIIth Century, Kinooni House was the palatial home of the governor of Lamu Archipelago for the Sultan of Zanzibar, off the coast of Kenya in the Indian Ocean, a centuries-old cradle of Swahili culture. It has now been carefully restored with its traditional Swahili design and fine craftsmanship to bring back the elegance, simplicity, and grandeur of the building. Behind its rough outside walls, it is nested as a true oasis of peace in the heart of the historic Lamu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. the centuries old decorative plasterwork are inspirational for the collection Kinooni Dialogues.
