Biography
Nishi Seiun (1882-1963)

1882 (Meiji 15) - 1963 (Showa 38)
Born in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture.
Japanese painter. Real name Nishimura Wasaku.
Self-taught in painting and sculpture, he spent six years studying sculpture in Nara.
He switched to Japanese painting due to eye disease. He moved to Tokyo and studied Southern painting under Yoshitsugu Haizan.
In 1914, he traveled to China and studied under Jin Qingyuan. In 1919, he became a student of Qi Baishi and devoted himself to studying Southern painting, establishing his own style of ink painting.
He learned calligraphy from Wang Yuanweng.
In 1923, he became acquainted with Wu Changshuo and moved to Shanghai, where he became a member of the Shanghai Hushanghui and taught calligraphy and painting at a local school. In 1930, he founded the Shanghai Southern Painting Academy. From this time on, he began to call himself Nishi Seiun.
He also held solo exhibitions in Japan.
After returning to Japan, he devoted himself to painting in the studio of Suntory president Torii Shinjiro.
In 1953, the name was changed to "Seiun(栖雲)".
In 1962, the Nishi Seiun Museum of Art was built in his hometown, but he died of sarcoma cancer in 1963.
