Rare Mesopotamian / Babylonian Stone Cylinder Seal

Circa 1st milllennium BC
This black stone cylinder seal features a contest scene carved into its surface. The seal is drilled lengthwise through the body for suspension. The depicted scene portrays two nude heroes, each adorned with a headdress. One hero is shown grasping an ibex, while the other hero holds a lion. Additionally, an inscription panel is present on the side of the scene.
Cylinder seals are primarily associated with Mesopotamian civilizations. These small, cylindrical objects, typically made of stone or other durable materials, bear intricate engravings that serve as both artistic expressions and practical tools. Originating in Sumer around 3500 BC, cylinder seals played a crucial role in administrative and economic transactions, serving as personal signatures for individuals in various aspects of daily life. The cylindrical shape allowed for easy rolling impressions onto clay or other soft materials, creating a unique and identifiable mark. Beyond their utilitarian function, these seals also depict mythological scenes, religious motifs, and historical narratives, offering invaluable insights into the cultural and social contexts of ancient Mesopotamia.

Dimensions: 40mm x 20mm; weight 30g
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-1960s Collections.
afterwards with the present owner.
