酒井抱一 Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828) Painter of the late Edo period. Founder of the Edo Rimpa school. From his youth, he widely practiced haiku, kyoka, Noh, and tea ceremonies. He first studied the Kano school of painting, then the ukiyoe style from Utagawa Toyoharu, the Shin Nanpin style from So Shiseki, and the Maruyama school and Tosa schools, but later became deeply attached to Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan.
