Rare Byzantine incense burner or lamp with 3 suspension loops on the rim for chain suspension.
The censer is circular in form. The lip is wide and flat and the vessel rests on three slightly flared legs.
Incense was introduced into the Christian liturgy after the reign of Constantine the Great. Open censers such as this one represents an early form and appear in Early Byzantine mosaics, for example those of S. Vitale in Ravenna.

Total height: ± 85 mm
Condition: Good solid condition with a beautiful malachite patina and visible encrustations. In the side are 3 spots worn through. See detailed image.
